Dark and Stormy

I am a dyed-through blackstrap rum person. I was so dismayed when, for obviously financial/sourcing reasons, Cruzan rum reformulated their Blackstrap rum circa 2009. The rum went from molassesey goodness to tasting of brined pennies and flat watery Coca-Cola sitting next to a stale banana. Shame on you, Cruzan!

In addition, I cannot get enough of the hot-spicy goodness of the bite of ginger. I've often thought of traveling with a flask of homemade extra spicy ginger syrup whereever I go, just so I can add it to every drink that I have.

This drink combines these two great tastes, and adds lime. Perfect in the summer, perfect in the winter. Perfect.

1/2 lime (fresh and juicy)
Dark Rum (originally Goslings, but OK to use Whalers or Myers. We happen to really enjoy the molasses flavor of Cruzan Black Strap Rum [yum, yum and yum!] in this drink)
Reed's Extra Ginger Brew (with the red bottlecap, NOT green, available in Santa Fe at Trader Joe's (!), Whole Foods and sometimes at Wild Oats, Kaune's or The Marketplace) - GOYA Ginger Beer is an acceptable substitute for those of you with good GOYA sections in your supermarket. Yes, ginger "beer" is non-alcoholic.
NOTE: If you can't obtain Reed's Extra or GOYA, then you can make a very poor substitute with any brand of ginger beer plus 1/2 tsp. dry ground ginger. If you cannot find ginger beer at all, then a really terribly bad substitute in a pinch would be ginger ale plus 1 tsp. dry ground ginger.

Fill a pint glass 3/4 full with ice, squeeze in all the juice from the 1/2 of a lime and then drop the lime in the glass. Pour in two shots of dark rum and fill with spicy ginger beer. Drink. Repeat.
